HOUSTON JUNIOR FORUM - FUNDRAISING AT ITS BEST !

For 65 years, the Houston Junior Forum has supported the needs of children, youth and senior adults in the community through volunteer service and with financial support. Click here to donate to the Houston Junior Forum

Financial support for early HJF projects and facilities was derived from the presentation of colorful Fiesta dances. With the support of local businesses such as Felix Mexican Restaurant, these dances helped to defray expenses at two projects: a library and the nursery school program. As the scope of our service expanded and the need for additional funding became apparent, the Forum began producing and performing annual variety shows called “Showtime.” With the guidance of a professional director, members and husbands performed in the shows and designed and built sets.  These performances were open to the public and staged at Jones Hall for many years.

The Forum has produced two cookbooks. “Scrumptious” printed in 1980 and “Buffet on the Bayou” in 1993. Proceeds from “Showtime” and the cookbooks helped fund three facilities and five programs owned and operated by HJF for over 60 years.

In 1987, the Forum turned its fundraising efforts to galas. In 1988, we experienced our most successful fundraising event with an attendance of 1,000 guests and a net income over $100,000. With support from local businesses and corporations, these galas provided funding for the Community House Preschool, our senior adult projects and the HJF College Scholarship Fund.

In recent years, the Forum held fundraising events that included special entertainment and speakers. Featured guests included: Cesear Milan, the “Dog Whisperer;” Chef Art Smith, former personal chef to Oprah Winfrey; William Stubbs, Houston interior designer; and SQuire Rushnell, author of the book series When God Winks, and his wife, Louise DuArt, a world famous impressionist.

In April, 2011, HJF celebrated 65 years for service to the community with an anniversary event at the Petroleum Club of Houston. Proceeds from the event were directed to the HJF College Scholarship Fund, providing assistance to 28 high school graduates, who attended our preschool.
